In February we spent the morning with the friendly and knowledgeable Will and Matt from Hidden Horizons at the beautiful Runswick Bay in North York Moors National Park. Runswick Bay boasts a stunning sandy beach and the only remaining thatched property on the North York Moors coastline.
We hosted five German tour operators on a familiarisation trip for them to learn about the experiences in the collection. Fossils, Forage & Feast is a truly immersive activity, where you can literally lose track of time spending hours on the beach searching for fossils, then collecting different seaweeds and whelks, before cooking them on an open fire. The tour operators loved this experience and found hauls of fossils to take back home!!
The ammonites of the Jurassic era are plentiful on this coast line; using a chisel you can crack the rocks open in one go to reveal the fossil and the swirly shape, or if you feel as though you might smash the actual fossil, Will advised that it’s a therapeutic past-time to tap away at them whilst sat outside one of the great coastal pubs with a local ale!
